Before you start

Have these four things ready and the whole appointment stays under ten minutes.

Your unsigned document
PDF, DOCX, JPG or PNG up to 20 MB. Do not sign it beforehand — the notary must witness the signature.
A valid photo ID
Unexpired passport, driver's license, state ID or military ID. The name must match the document exactly.
Camera, mic & internet
iPhone, Android or laptop with a working camera. The session is recorded, as state law requires.
All signers present
Every person signing joins the same call — we send each one their own secure link.

The full process, step by step

Nothing gets printed, mailed or scanned. Here's exactly what happens from the moment you upload.

~8 minutes total
  1. 1 · Upload your document1 min

Start a session and drop in the file. We detect signature, initial and date fields and let you place any we missed. Add a second signer if the document needs one.

  2. 2 · Verify your identity2 min

Photograph the front and back of your ID and take a selfie. We run credential analysis on the ID and match it to your face, then ask a short set of knowledge-based questions drawn from public records — the standard required for remote online notarization.

  3. 3 · Get matched with a notary0–2 min

Take the next open slot on-demand, usually under two minutes, or schedule a time that suits you. We assign a notary commissioned in the state your document requires.

  4. 4 · Meet on live video3 min

The notary greets you, confirms your identity, checks that you're signing willingly and are aware of what you're signing, and reads through the document with you. The whole call is recorded and stored.

  5. 5 · Sign while they watch1 min

You apply your electronic signature in the browser, in real time, in the notary's view. Multiple signers sign in turn on the same call.

  6. 6 · Notary seals & journals1 min

The notary applies their digital seal and commission details, completes the notarial certificate, and records the act in their electronic journal with the session recording attached.

  7. 7 · Download your sealed PDFinstant

You get a tamper-evident PDF with a digital certificate — any later edit breaks the seal and is detectable. It's stored in your Starthub app permanently and emailed to every signer.
